Well the new year is just a few weeks away and all ready the marketing campaigns for weight loss are in full swing. TV ads promising pounds melting away, news stories on people who have dropped dramatic amounts of weight are popping up, newspaper pages offering deals if you join a gym/weightloss program by January 1st are in every week. All of these hoping to capitalize on the new year's resolutions of the Christmas cookie munching, eggnog swilling, candycane crunching public.
If you are willing to buy into all of that and throw out all of the chocolates and cookies, ice cream and gingerbread left over after Christmas and any other goodies that arrived in your stocking then go for it! But if you'd like to try something less drastic and longer lasting then keep checking back on this blog starting January 2012 for small easy steps to slow but steady changes to better health that will last and last and last. I'll be making manageable suggestions for you to make manageable changes to your current eating and exercise habits.
New year's resolutions - bah humbug! It's not now or never, it's what lasts forever. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you.

Weight Loss & Homeopathy
I've been having many conversations this spring about weight loss. I guess it goes with the New Year's resolutions that tend to fade out after a month or two. I get it. I really do. Having been a woman who has yo-yoed in weight for many years through fad diets, crazy amounts of exercise, unhealthy amounts of food and two pregnancies I can relate to the mind set of all or nothing.
We all seem to know we need to eat more healthily, we need to be more active but no matter how perfectly logical and smart those choices are we seem unable to motivate ourselves for more than short periods of time. Sometimes it lasts a day, until that 8pm sweet craving arrives or sometimes it goes for a month until we miss a few days of exercise and throw in the towel.
I know I found change that came gradually and has lasted for more than 3 years now arrived with a new mentality that I've never before had. It started slow with not feeling as many cravings. Wanting to actually eat better food when I had two choices before me. Feeling strange if I didn't get out and do something physical each day. It was like the mental and emotional me decided to get on board and deep down inside I couldn't shake the need to eat better and exercise more because I.... hang on for it.... LIKED IT, NEEDED IT and felt the day was INCOMPLETE WITHOUT IT. Now if this was the old me reading this I'd be saying "yeah, sure, I'd love to be like that, but who's kidding who, I hate exercising, I love food". Strange how things can change so completely and so deeply.
Now you're probably wondering how did this change come about. Did I have a spiritual epiphany? Did I find some self-help guru? Did I bang my head a little too hard? No, none of these. The change came when I started to go to a homeopath regularly for monthly visits. Not even for this issue. I went for physical issues, you know... allergies, asthma, migraines, regular stuff. As I continued to go and my physical issues improved I was finding that my motivation to feel healthy grew as well. My homeopath never pushed anything about diet or exercise, not a word. Yet I lost over 45 pounds and 4 dress sizes. I ran in multiple 5 and 10K races and a half-marathon, started swimming laps and road biking FOR FUN! None of which I'd ever done or desired to do before.
So what happened? My educated guess is that since homeopathy trains the body to recognize signs and symptoms that need to be dealt with in order to be the most healthy it can be physically, mentally and emotionally, it provides a wonderful advantage. What is that advantage? It creates a deep seated desire in a body that is learning to become more and more healthy to want to excel at that in all areas. Thus the spill over into getting up and moving more and cravings that include more vegetables and less garbage foods. Not a bad side benefit is it?
Wouldn't it be nice to be the kind of person who doesn't struggle internally with the "should/shouldn't" conversations over food and exercise? I believe homeopathy can provide a strong support for those with any health issue, but especially in the area of weight where the mind-body connection is such a strong one. I've experiences it first hand and I see it in my patients. If you haven't tried regular homeopathic treatment to help in your health struggles you are missing out big time and I know because it's changed my life!

Homeopathy For the Family Workshops
The Homeopathy for the Family Workshops have been well attended in Bolton. January we covered how to treat the Common Cold, February we dealt with Fevers and coming up March 28th we will be covering allergies. Spring is on it's way, whether it seems like it or not, and with it come those bothersome allergy symptoms. This time around we will cover 2 seasonal allergy remedies and 1 acute allergy remedy. Each month's workshop includes a vial of each remedy covered and a sheet on the most common symptoms to help decide between the remedies. This allows you to treat in your own home with more confidence and skill. If you'd like to attend upcoming workshops please email me at dawn@arbourhomeopathy.com or call 905-533-0714.
Also a vaccination talk will be scheduled shortly for the Orangeville area. Watch for new info on that.
